Helio Gracie, Promoter of Jiu-Jitsu, Dies at 95

Helio Gracie, one of the main creators of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a form of mixed martial arts that gained worldwide popularity, died Thursday. He was 95.

His death was announced in a short statement posted on the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Web site, which said he was buried in the mountain resort town of Petropolis, near Rio de Janeiro.

The Agencia Estado news service said the cause was pneumonia.

Gracie introduced a series of adaptations to traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu that emphasized leverage and position as a way to compensate for size differences among opponents.

More than 40 sons and grandsons of Gracie and his brother Carlos helped popularize Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu around the world.

One of Gracie’s sons, Rorion, was a founder of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, an organization that promotes mixed martial arts as a combat sport in the United States, where it is seen as a more exciting alternative to boxing and wrestling.

Gracie is survived by his wife and nine children.

Shootboxing rules

S-Cup is the premier tournament for the Shootboxing organisation. Shootboxing rules is pretty much the same as Muay Thai with the addition of throws and standing submissions. A throw must be at least waist height to be scored and when it is scored the referee will shout "shoot". A shoot is equivalent to a knockdown in shootboxing scoring. A successful standing submission is equivalent to a KO/ TKO. Only top level professional shootboxing rules allow elbows. Usually against western foreigners elbows are not allowed. Elbows are not allowed in the S-Cup tournament IIRC. A fighter under the Shootboxing organisation usually wear the shootboxing pants, which are long tight pants with thin shin pads.

Jens Pulver is a former UFC lightweight champion who has also competed briefly but successfully as a professional boxer. He's known for his boxing skills mixed with wrestling.

Dai Chang Liang (Dai Jyouan in Japanese) was reported to be a 2004 Sanda champion. I have not heard of him before until this match. He seems to be the typical Sanda fighter, good kicks (esp. side kicks), bad punching and non-existant knees.

Renzo Gracie Seminar(Singapore)

Renzo Gracie and his Chief Instructor, Rafael Gordinho, will be distinguished guests at Evolve MMA for the Grand Opening at the gym (Paradiz Centre, #02-22 in Singapore)on 15 January (7-9pm).The Grand Opening is FREE of charge and visitors are encouraged to attend and hear Renzo speak on BJJ, MMA and bringing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Singapore. Local media will be in attandance and Evolve MMA will be raffling off gifts throughout the evening (i.e. Renzo Gracie competition gi's and belts signed by Renzo, Private Lessons with Braga Neto, Evolve MMA T-Shirts signed by Renzo, tickets to attend the Renzo Seminars, etc.).

Mike Hutchison

Mike Huntchison is one of the top grapler in south east asia region. Competing under modified grappling rules, the event allowed several advanced submissions including heel hooks, spine locks, and neck cranks. Hutch won gold in the under 88 Kilo division defeating Synergy Jiu Jitsu instructor, and 3x tournament winner Max Metino in the finals with an impressive knee bar submission. Stepping into the open weight division Hutch, competing as a BJJ white belt took home a bronze medal, eventually losing to BJJ Purple belt Fransino Tirta in the Semi Finals by guillotine choke.

One of our gym fighter fought him in final no gi submission grapling before last year(2008) which the round end out with Mike submited our gym fighter via rare naked choke. but it was a nice match though. I am sure we will see more of his action in 2009!
